Atu XII: The Hanged Man
The Hanged Man is the 12th trump in the Major Arcana of the Thoth Tarot. This is the first design of the series and the first leather harness released by Babalon Leather. The strap lines coincide with the figure of the man on the card with the neck ring representing the ankh and the waist straps the outstretched arms.
The divinatory meaning of the card for me is change or sacrifice beyond the control of the querent. Many equate it to terminal illness and death but while the themes of the card are sinister they don’t always have to be negative. While Crowley attributed this figure to the image of the Dying God of Christian mythos I see a connection to Odin hanging from the ash tree to gain knowledge. Instilling that every sacrifice no matter how devastating can have a positive return.
“It should be the chiefest aim of the wise to rid mankind of the insolence of self-sacrifice, of the calamity of chastity; faith must be slain by certainty and chastity by ecstasy.”
